I live in a happy city:

The Steelers kicked butt on Monday night (7 sacks!), and is in the elite of the NFL this year; Pitt is doing well; Penn State beat Ohio State in Columbus and is #2 or #3 depending on the poll; and we voted overwhelmingly to send Sarah Palin back to Alaska!

P.S. Indiana, a normally-conservative state in which I lived last year, went for Obama-- pretty amazing, considering how I was having a conversation about that with someone 6 months ago, and we both agreed that Indiana was far too "red" to ever go "blue". But it happened (if just barely).

Sarah Palin never "left" Alaska, so how did "we" vote "overwhelmingly" to send her "back" there?

The reality is that (1) a great many people voted to make her the first female VP, (2) the vote in favor of Obama was not overwhelming, and (3) Palin never ceased being Governor of Alaska.

I think you may have an understandable case of post-election giddiness. But it's time to face the reality that governing is quite different from campaigning.

Having said that, however, I'm hoping that Obama's administration succeeds in fixing the most serious problems that our nation faces. Unfortunately, I don't expect alot of fiscal discipline from a Democratic White House and Democratic Congress, and that does not bode well for our nation (and yes, I blame the Republicans in large part for being the authors of profligate spending over the last eight years; but the Democrats hardly tried to stop it).

Kevin, Kevin, it's tongue-in-cheek. Regarding "overwhelming", I was referring to Pittsburgh specifically. The vote for Obama may not have been overwhelming overall, but it was a bigger majority than Bush ever had (especially the first time!) True, many people did vote for her, but she also arguably cost the election for McCain, given that her first couple interviews were the marking-point for McCain's drop in the polls from which he never recovered.

I beg to differ. I think McCain's campaign was dead-in-the-water until he picked Palin, and although the first two interviews with Gibson and Couric were rough (and not without a dishonest streak in the ersatz "interviewers"), her ability to energize the Republican base is indisputable, and the size of the crowds she drew was phenomenal. All those people didn't come out to see some Republican "bimbo."

I'm glad Obama drew as many votes as he did. It precludes alot of wasted speculation about the legitimacy of his Presidency. That will hopefully go a long way to disempowering people like Jesse Jackson who have built their careers and wealth on the premise that the United States is irretrievably and structurally racist and always will be.

There's no way Palin cost McCain the election. If anything, McCain cost McCain the election. Or, to put it a better way, Obama just flat out beat him. I'm more than willing to give credit where credit is due. Blaming Palin is a backhanded slap at Obama's achievement.
