| As I expected, a lot of the criticism of Obama has been predictable fluff. However, there are some reasons to question his incoming administration's judgment, as evidenced by this piece by Frank Rich in the NY Times.
In other news, although rust-belt cities have taken a lot of flak in the last half-century, it turns out that our region may not be such a bad place to live in a recession. I have a business associate in the Phoenix area, and he tells the that there are 5-6 foreclosures on his street alone, and statistically (last I heard), his area was the worst nationally in foreclosures. Big boom, big bust.

| Read this. It's quite interesting, not that I agree with every detail. My favorite part, being a Mac lover, is the last paragraph: "Lastly, somebody ought to call Steve Jobs, who doesn’t need to be bribed to do innovation, and ask him if he’d like to do national service and run a car company for a year. I’d bet it wouldn’t take him much longer than that to come up with the G.M. iCar." | | |
| Turns out the Georgian/Western "narrative" of this summer's war, in which Russia was a sole aggressor, was deeply flawed-- according to international monitors.
Note: I am not saying that Georgia/U.S./NATO was exclusively at fault; as one commentator said, there was no "good guy" in this conflict. Everyone involved was acting somewhat hypocritically. However, this story directly contradicts the "Russia as aggressor" story line popularized (and hardly challenged) in the U.S.
| The Steelers kicked butt on Monday night (7 sacks!), and is in the elite of the NFL this year; Pitt is doing well; Penn State beat Ohio State in Columbus and is #2 or #3 depending on the poll; and we voted overwhelmingly to send Sarah Palin back to Alaska!
P.S. Indiana, a normally-conservative state in which I lived last year, went for Obama-- pretty amazing, considering how I was having a conversation about that with someone 6 months ago, and we both agreed that Indiana was far too "red" to ever go "blue". But it happened (if just barely).
